Ghetto Gardening 2015

06/08/15:

The tomato seedlings are growing quickly, so I'm transplanting them to their own large pots. However, there are 26 healthy little plants, and I don't have room for all of them! Will have to give some away to friends. The pepper seeds that sprouted haven't grown nearly as big. Unless they hurry up, I doubt I'll get any fruit from these plants before the growing season is over in October. The two cayenne plants I bought at the garden store are still doing well. Both have flowers, and one has small green peppers. The basil and thyme planted from seed aren't much bigger than a month ago, but these tend to survive year-round so I'm not impatient with their lack of progress.

Clicking on the small images below will bring up a full-size version.

The blackberry bushes are now flowering. Should start getting berries in a few weeks. Some of my violas are blooming nicely, others have died. I suppose this is why they sell such plants in packs of six, so that you still have some even when a few don't survive transplanting or get eaten by bugs/snails. I found ideas through Pinterest of easy, inexpensive, natural-ish weed and pest repellents, so have been experimenting. It seems that garlic-based preparations could be effective for getting rid of aphids at least. Insect Repellent and Weed Control
